June 3, 2020:
The sign for our Church was vandalized with ALM, we presume All Lives Matter, spray painted on it in red. Other locations in town along the route of a Black Lives Matter protest were also marked. We are grateful to a member of the local Black Lives Matters group for cleaning our sign.
We are a proud member of our Cortland, NY Community with a proud history of social activism from being part of the Underground Railroad, The Women’s Suffrage Movement and The Civil Rights Movement. In the 1850’s, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garrison, Ralph Waldo Emerson and many others spoke to support women’s right to vote. Frederick Douglas and Martin Luther King Jr. have spoken in our church.
October 31, 2020:
All of us at the UU church of Cortland want to express our gratitude for the outpouring of love and support we have received. It is good to be reminded that the world is full of so many loving communities and so many loving people.
Our congregation has a long history of working for justice and embodying love in the world. We were part of the underground railroad and the abolitionist movement. We helped host Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr when he came to speak in Cortland.
We are a Welcoming Congregation, striving to make sure LGBTQ people are full members of our faith community. We hosted the very first Interfaith Pride service in Cortland just this past June.
We continue to strive for radical inclusion, creating a space that honors every part of our identities, backgrounds and experiences.
Your care and support help us to continue our work toward a world transformed by love.
Thank You.
